Antique pottery marks

Antique pottery marks, when I first looked into this subject I was really blown away. The number of sites and the extent of information on pottery marks are immense. First off there are different types of marks. The first one I call just a mark. This is one which is imprinted in the bottom of a piece of pottery and it is fired in when the piece is fired. This type of mark is one that is permanent and cannot be removed. Imprinting was made by either by a stamp pushed into the bottom of the piece. The second type of Mark is what I call an hand made mark. This is made by a sharp tool and the mark is inscribed in the bottom. With either type of mark this identification is made up as a signature or a symbol or a date. They could be made up as a combination of all three types or just one or the other. The websites that are shown here go into a lot more detail on marks the many different types that came about over the centuries. This type of identification has really helped to identify these beautiful pieces of pottery. If you are looking for a specific mark I am quite sure you will find it in one of these sites. Check them out.
